What is it?

This is a short course that leads to nationally recognised qualification from CACDP. It aims to introduce trainees to a range of basic tactics for clear communication with deaf people. Background information about deaf issues and some basic deaf awareness training is provided. It is ideal for front-line staff dealing with the public on a regular basis in both the public and private sectors.

Trainees are required to pass a seven-minute practical assessment with an assessor from CACDP to achieve a Certificate in Communication Tactics.

This course is typically held over two days. The first day involves 6 hours of tutition and the assessments are held on the second day.

Objectives

Communicating with deaf peopleBy the end of the course trainees should be able to:

- Respond appropriately to the fact a deaf person could have any degree of hearing loss

- Seat themselves in an appropriate position for effective communication to take place

- Explain what steps can be taken if a deaf person is not undestood

- Demonstrate an ability to use a range of tactics to allow effective communication with a deaf person
