Introduction to British Sign Language

Anna Lickley, BSL tutorIf you are interested in gaining some basic sign language skills and improving the communication skills of yourself or of staff within your organisation then this is the course for you. There are an estimated 60,000 BSL users in Britain making it the most widely used UK language after English and Welsh. The aim of the course is to give trainees an introduction to this fascinating language and build confidence in their ability to communicate with BSL users.

This course can be adapted to meet the needs of our clients. For example, if you work in the customer services sector we can teach signs that are particularly useful when confronted with deaf members of the public.

This course can be held in a half day (3 hours) or full day (5 hours + lunch break) format. It can be taken with deaf awareness training built in - see options.

Half-Day Course Objectives - Trainees will:

  • Learn the fingerspelling alphabet allowing them to spell any word using sign language
  • Be able to give basic information about themselves in BSL
  • Be able to sign numbers in BSL

Full-Day Course Objectives - As half-day plus:

  • Learn how to give directions in BSL
  • Learn a number of signs useful in their workplace
